EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team jumped out to a 10-2 lead after four innings, but the Utah Valley University Wolverines outscored the Broncs 14-2 over the rest of the game to win 16-12 on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Down 2-1 going into the bottom of the third, the Broncs (27-28, 17-10 Great West Conference) batted around in each of the next two innings to build their eight-run lead.
Shane Ammon led off the third with an infield-single, and two outs later,
Aaron Moore hit an RBI-single and
Riley Goulding hit his second home run of the season. A walk and a single later,
Will Klausing hit his second RBI-single of the game to make it 5-2.
Ammon led off the third with a walk and PSJA alum
Bryan Ramirez hit his second home run of the season off the left field foul pole. The Broncs then loaded the bases, setting up an RBI-single by
Derek Hagy and an RBI-fielder's choice by Klausing to make it 10-2.
The Wolverines (24-28, 15-9 GWC) started their comeback in the fifth. Three-straight singles to start the inning led to a run, and a sacrifice fly by
Greyson Bogden made it a 10-4 game.
That was it against La Joya native
Guadalupe Barrera, who pitched five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out one in his first start of the season.
In the sixth,
Matt Daniels came in and allowed three-straight singles to load the bases.
Matthew Harrell entered and got a double play from the first batter he faced, but plunked and walked the next two before being lifted in favor of
Luis Flores, who allowed an RBI-single and hit a batter. Moore came in to face
Kai Hatch with the tying runs on base and allowed a triple to make it 10-10.
The Broncs took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-double by
Jacob Huckabay and an RBI-single by Ramirez that made it 12-10.
After a leadoff walk in the eighth, Roma alum
Isaac Martinez (0-1) relieved Moore and allowed three doubles in the inning, the last of which, by
Stone Ramsey, gave the Wolverines a 13-12 lead.
The Wolverines added three in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
That made a winner of
Brian Whatcott (2-1), who pitched a scoreless eighth and got the first out of the ninth.
The second-seeded Broncs open up the Great West Conference Tournament, hosted by NJIT, on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. against seventh-seeded NYIT.
