WACO – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team starts off their dual-match season on the road at No. 19 Baylor on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center.
 
Last Time Out
The Broncs closed out their fall tournament season at the Sam Houston State Bearkat Classic. Roma-native Julia Periz, sophomore Reegan Greenwood and freshman Mariana Ranzahuer each won a back draw championship to the Broncs.
 
Perez won the Flight C back draw championship after defeating Oral Roberts' Nika Munoz 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3). Greenwood beat Oral Roberts' Mairead Cleary 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (14-12) to win the Flight B back draw championship while Ranzahuer defeated Haley Martin 6-4, 6-0 to win the Flight A back draw championship.
 
In doubles, Ranzahuer teamed with Greenwood to win the doubles back draw championship.
 
Scouting the Bears
The Bears finished last season with 17-15 record and enter this season ranked No. 19 in the country. Sophomore Kiah Generette is ranked 38^th in singles while the doubles team of Victoria Kisialeva and Blair Shankle is ranked 37^th.
 
The Bears bring back seven from last year's team, including Big 12 Player of the Year Ema Burgic. They also add three newcomers in Shankle and tranfers Makenzie Craft and Alicia Robinson.
 
Baylor opened the season with a 6-1 victory over Hawai'I on Jan. 11. Prior to the match against the Broncs, the Bears will face Ohio State at 1 p.m.
 
The Series
The Broncs are 0-2 against the Bears all-time in a series dating back to 1990. The last time the Broncs and Bears faced each other was on February 23, 1991 when the Bears defeated the Broncs 7-1.
 
Globetrotters
The Broncs currently have 10 student-athletes on the roster representing eight different countries including Bulgaria, Canada, England, France, Greece, Mexico, Slovakia and the United States.
 
Next Up
The Broncs host the University of Maryland Baltimore County in their home opener on Jan. 24 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
