Joesaar's Double-Double Lifts Men's Basketball to Win at UTSA

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – Sophomore Janari Joesaar posted his second-straight double-double to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team past the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners 63-62 on Monday at the Convocation Center.

The Broncs are off to their first 2-0 start since 2007-08.

Joesaar led the Broncs with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting to go with a career-high 18 rebounds (five offensive), a career-high four assists, a career-high six blocks and one steal. The 18 rebounds are the highest total by a Broncs player since prior to the 2008-09 season. The six blocks are tied for the seventh most in a single game in program history and the highest total since Jan. 21, 2004, when Ryan Lange had six blocks against UT Arlington.

Three other Broncs reached double-figures in scoring, led by junior Shaquille Boga, who scored 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc, with four assists and one steal. Junior Shaquille Hines scored 15 points with seven rebounds. Freshman Dan Kimasa scored 10 points with eight rebounds and two blocks.

Ryan Bowie led the Roadrunners (1-1) with 18 points, six rebounds and three steals. Jeromie Hill posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Keon Lewis finished with 10 points, four assists and two steals.

The Roadrunners led 21-15 midway through the first half, but Hines hit a free throw and then Joesaar and Kimasa hit baskets to make it a one-point game.

The Broncs tied the game for the first time at 25-25 on a pair of Hines free throws.

The game was tied 27-27 at halftime, and after the Roadrunners took the lead back on baskets by Larry Lewis Jr. and Lewis, Hines hit back-to-back baskets to tie the game and then Joesaar gave the Broncs their first lead since the opening minutes with a layup. It was all part of an 8-0 run that saw the Broncs go up 35-31 with 15:55 remaining.

The Roadrunners scored the next six points to take the lead, but a Kimasa layup tied the game as the Broncs scored six-straight to go up 41-37. Hill hit a three-pointer to bring the Roadrunners within one, but Kimasa responded with a layup.

The Roadrunners took the lead back at the 8:22 mark on a dunk by Kaj-Bjorn Sherman, and then, after a Hines tip-in, the Roadrunners again took the lead, this time on a Lewis Jr. layup. Boga responded with a layup to put the Broncs up 51-50 and kick off a 9-0 run over a span of five minutes.

The Roadrunners got back on the board on a Lewis three with 2:24 remaining, and then pulled to within one on a Bowie three-point play 25 seconds later.

Boga hit a jumper to push the Broncs' lead to three, but Bowie nailed a three to tie it. Boga then responded with a three to give the Broncs a 63-60 lead with 40 seconds left, and the Broncs never trailed again.

The Broncs will go for their first 3-0 start since 2006-07 when they return home to face Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Doors open at 6.
