Box ScorePhoto GalleryEDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team beat the Texas A&M International University Dustdevils 90-72 in an exhibition game on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Janari Joesaar led the Broncs with 26 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc plus 9-of-10 from the line, to go with eight rebounds (four offensive), two assists and two steals. Junior
Everett Osborne scored 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting plus 6-of-7 from the line, with three assists and two steals. Junior
Shaquille Hines scored 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, plus 6-of-8 from the line, with eight rebounds, two assists, one block and four steals. Freshman and McAllen-native
Maurice McDonald led the Broncs with seven assists to go with four points, three steals and two rebounds. The Broncs shot .580 (29-50) from the field, including .385 (5-of-13) from behind the arc.
Montrice McKnight led Dustdevils with 11 points on 3-of-7 shooting, plus 5-of-6 from the line.
Vadal Faniel also scored 11 points, connecting on 4-of-6 shots, plus 3-of-4 from the line, while
Terrell Funches scored 10 points. The Dustdevils shot .429 (24-56) from the field, including .214 (3-14) from behind the arc.
The Broncs jumped out to an 8-0 lead on a Joesaar layup and six free throws, keeping the Dustdevils off the board for the first six minutes. The Dustdevils pulled within 13-9 on an
Anthony Alston layup, but Osborne hit a layup and Joesaar buried a three to push the Broncs' lead to 18-9 with 10:59 to go in the first half.
A few minutes later, with the Broncs' lead at 20-15, graduate student
Shaun Noriega hit a jumper to spark an 18-3 run over a span of 5:11 that saw the Broncs go up 38-18. Noriega had five points during the run while Hines had six and Osborne had four as the Broncs went 6-for-7 from the field and 5-for-6 from the line.
The Dustdevils pulled within 16 at 43-27 on a
David Horst three at the start of the first half, but the Broncs responded with a 12-4 run to put the game out of reach.
The Broncs open the regular season on Friday at 7 p.m. against Wayland Baptist University at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free t-shirt. Doors open at 6.
