Shaquille Hines tied his career-high in points, field goals and assists, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks 77-72 on Sunday at Ralston Arena.
Hines led the Broncs (5-7) with 27 points on 12-of-20 shooting to go with nine rebounds and five assists. Senior
Shaquille Boga scored 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-8 from behind the arc, with three rebounds and four assists. Sophomore
Janari Joesaar scored 11 points with eight rebounds.
Marcus Tyus led four Mavericks (6-5) in double-figures scoring with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc, to go with nine rebounds.
Devin Patterson scored 17 points with five rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Tre'Shawn Thurman scored 14 points with six rebounds.
Mike Rostampour scored 12 points with five rebounds.
The Mavericks led for the majority of the first 10 minutes, as the Broncs took their first lead at 17-16 on a layup by junior
Andreas Bigum with 10:25 remaining in the first half.
The Broncs extended their lead to 21-18 on a Joesaar jumper, capping what was a 7-2 run, before the Mavericks tied it on a Tyus three and took the lead on a Rostampour jumper.
The Broncs regained the lead on a jumper by freshman McAllen-native
Moe McDonlad that made it 26-25, but the Mavericks came back to tie the game at 28-28 on another Tyus three.
Up by six at halftime, the Mavericks scored the first eight points out of the break to push their lead to 49-35. The Broncs responded with a 7-0 run to pull within seven on a layup by Hines.
The Broncs got back within six with 7:23 left on a Boga jumper that made it 64-58 before the Mavericks scored five-straight points to push their lead back into double-figures. The Broncs followed with an 11-0 run, tying the game at 69 on a Boga three at the 3:24 mark.
The game was tied at 70 with 2:15 remaining after a free throw by junior
Everett Osborne, but Tyus hit a layup and then
CJ Carter nailed a three and a pair of free throws to put the game away.
The Broncs are back in action on Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. when they visit Duquesne.
