EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team faces off against the Prairie View A&M Panthers in their home opener on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
The Broncs opened their season on the road at No. 19 Baylor where they fell 1-6 to the Bears at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
The Bears got things started in doubles sweep the first two matches to clinch the doubles point.
The Broncs earned their only point of the match when
Wanda Beguelin defeated Makenzie Craft 7-6, (8-6), 6-4 in the No. 4 singles position.
Reegan Greenwood dropped the first set, 2-6, to Abby Stainback in the No 6 singles spot but bounced back with a 6-3 second set win before falling 1-0 in the tie breaker.
Beguelin Earns WAC Athlete of the Week
Senior
Wanda Beguelin was named WAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week after her efforts against the No. 19 Baylor Bears.
Beguelin is the first women's tennis player to win the honor this season.
Scouting the Panthers
The Panthers are 0-3 on the season. They kicked of 2014 with a loss to Ohio State in Waco, falling 0-7. They then faced the Baylor Bears, also falling 0-7.
Prairie View A&M is coming off of a 6-1 loss to the University of Maryland Baltimore County Retrievers. Taylor LeFridge picked up the only point for the Panthers as she won in the No. 2 singles spot.
The Panthers bring back three from last season, including junior Christine Ngo Gwodog who won 10 dual match victories last season. They also welcome back Erika Bond and Brittany Harrell.
The Series
The Broncs are 10-1 against the Panthers all-time in a series dating back to 1986. The last time they faced each other was in 2013 and it was the Broncs who got the 5-2 victory at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Globetrotters
The Broncs currently have 10 student-athletes on the roster representing eight different countries including Bulgaria, Canada, England, France, Greece, Mexico, Slovakia and the United States.
Next Up
The Broncs hit the road as they travel to Corpus Christi to face the Islanders on Feb. 10 at 3 p.m.
