EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball used a five-run first inning to beat the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 11-1 to split a doubleheader on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The game ended in the bottom of the seventh inning due to the 10-run mercy rule after
Alberto Morales was hit by a pitch that allowing freshman
Omar Avila to score the final run.
The Broncs got things started in the bottom of the first as freshman and McAllen Memorial alum
Bryant Stites drew a bases loaded walk that allowed freshman
Victor Garcia Jr. to come in and score. One out later, senior
Alex Howe hit a bases clearing double that scored
Evan Mason,
Alberto Morales and Stites.
Jesus Garcia then followed with an RBI single that scored Howe making it 5-0.
The Broncs (2-1) added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth as
Victor Garcia Jr. plated senior
Shane Ammon from third. Morales then followed with an RBI sacrifice fly that drove in sophomore
Bryan Ramirez from third. One out later, Stites hit an RBI single that drove in Garcia pushing the Broncs' lead to 8-0.
After the Broncs added another run in the bottom of the fifth, the Islanders responded with a run in the top of the sixth as Kyle Danford drove in Cody Stephens with an RBI fielder's choice making it 9-1.
The Broncs added two more in the bottom of the seventh as
Brandon Roush hit an RBI single that scored Ammon from third and then two batters later Morales was hit by a pitch to end the game.
Starter
Matthew Harrell (1-0) pitched a complete game allowing just one run on two hits and three strikeouts.
The Broncs and Islanders close out their four-game series Sunday at 12 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
