EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 10-0 on Sunday in a game that ended after seven innings at Edinburg Baseball Stadium due to the 10-run rule.
The Islanders (2-2) struck right away against
Matt Daniels (0-1), as
Cody Stephens led off the game with an infield-single, moved to second on a balk and scored on an RBI-single by
Tyler Ware. One batter later,
Zach Gibson drove Ware home to make it 2-0 Islanders.
The Islanders added three unearned runs in the third.
Jordan Lee reached on an error to start the inning and stole second. After a groundout and walk, Gibson hit an RBI-single, and then, with two outs,
Dominic Lopez hit a two-run single to knock out Daniels with the score 5-0.
The Islanders loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth against
Tanner Dickerson.
Logan Landon came in and hit
Kyle Danford before walking Gibson to force-in two runs.
Nolan Atkins then allowed an infield RBI-single to
Brandon Tierney to make it 8-0.
The Islanders tacked on two runs in the seventh on an RBI-single by Stephens and a sacrifice fly by Lee.
The Broncs (2-2) threatened for the first time in the second against
Devin Skapura (1-0). Redshirt freshman McAllen Memorial alum
Bryant Stites and senior
Alex Howe singled to give the Broncs two on with two out, but Skapura struck out senior
Shane Ammon to escape the threat.
The Broncs threatened again in the sixth against
Kevin Landgrebe when junior
Evan Mason and freshman
Victor Garcia Jr. singled to put two on with one out, but senior
Alberto Morales popped out and Stites grounded out to end the inning.
The Broncs open up the Al Ogletree Classic on Friday at 7 p.m. when they host Northwestern State at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Gates open at 6.
