Men's Tennis Visits UT Arlington Friday

ARLINGTON – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team hits the road to face the University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks on Friday at 12 p.m. at the UTA Tennis Center.
 
Last Time Out
The Broncs (2-7) are coming off of a 2-5 loss to the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals.
 
The doubles team of Juan Cruz Soria and Mauricio Fosado clinched the doubles point for the Broncs after they defeated Brandon Davis and Johan Haerens 6-4 at No. 3 doubles. Ricardo Hopker and Chetan Panditi opened doubles with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Jair Assucao and Tucker Brown.
 
In singles, the Cardinals responded with five wins in singles competition. The Broncs got their lone singles pint as Joseph Bishop defeated Antonio Cavazos 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot.
 
The Broncs took three of their singles matches to three sets as Soria fell 3-6, 6-2, 6-5 at No. 1 singles to Assucao. Sebastien Job dropped his first set 0-6 to Leonard Ivic but bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second set before falling 3-6 in the third. Ricardo Hopker took Brown to three sets as he opened with a 6-2 first set victory but fell 6-4, 6-3 to close out the match.
 
Scouting the Mavericks
The Mavericks are 2-4 on the season and they are coming off of a 6-1 loss to the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs.
 
Their two wins on the season have come against Cameron, who they beat 6-1 on Feb. 8, and Midwestern State, who they beat 6-1 on Feb. 12.
 
The Mavericks have three players with three dual match victories in singles competition. Daniel Armengol has a 3-2 dual match record in singles while mainly playing at No. 3 singles. Sebastian Erimicioiu has a 3-2 record at No. 4 singles and Mario Muniesa has a 3-2 at No. 5 singles.
 
In doubles, the Mavericks have a pair of undefeated teams. The duo of Carlos Arbiza and Javier Perez are 4-0 while going 3-0 at No. 1 doubles and 1-0 at No. 2 doubles. Armengol and Austin Robles are 5-0 at No. 3 doubles.
 
UTA is 2-2 at the UTA Tennis Center this season.
 
The Series
The Broncs are 7-20 all-time against the Mavericks in a series that dates back to 1983. They last faced each other on April 9, 2012 when the Mavericks defeated the Broncs 6-1 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Globetrotters
The Broncs have eight student-athletes representing six countries including, Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, India, Mexico and the United States. Sanoja is from the Rio Grande Valley as he calls Mission home.
 
Next Up
The Broncs are back in action on Feb. 28 when they return home to host Grand Canyon at 1 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
