EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team returns home to face the Grand Canyon University Antelopes on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
The Broncs (2-8) are coming off of a 1-6 loss to the University of Texas at Arlington last Friday.
The Broncs got their one doubles win at No. 1 doubles as the team of
Ricardo Hopker and
Chetan Panditi defeated Javier Perez and Carlos Arbiza 8-6 but the Mavericks (4-4) won at No. 2 and 3 doubles to clinch the point.
In singles, Panditi provided the lone point for the Broncs as he defeated Arbiza in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. After dropping the first set 3-6,
Alejandro Sanoja took the second set 6-2 from Sebastian Erimicioiu at No. 4 singles but fell 2-6 in the third.
Joseph Bishop also took his match at No. 5 singles to three sets. He dropped the first set 2-6 to Mario Muniesa and then took the second 6-3 before dropping the third set 0-6.
Scouting the Antelopes
The Antelopes are 4-3 on the season and are coming off of a 6-1 victory over Chicago State. They also have wins against St. Francis, UC Riverside and Abilene Christian.
Felix Scheuller and Alexander Roggenkamp lead the Antelopes with four victories in singles. Scheuller has a 4-2 record while playing primarily at No. 4 singles while Roggenkamp has a 4-3 record playing primarily at No. 6 singles.
Roggenkamp and teammate Benjamin Collomb have a 5-1 record at No. 3 doubles and are currently riding a four-match winning streak.
The Series
This is the first ever meeting between the Broncs and the Antelopes.
Globetrotters
The Broncs have eight student-athletes representing six countries including, Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, India, Mexico and the United States. Sanoja is from the Rio Grande Valley as he calls Mission home.
Next Up
The Broncs are back in action on Sunday when they host WAC rival Kansas City at 9 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
