EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team scored 44 points in the first half, their most in any first half this season, en route to beating the California State University, Bakersfield Roadrunners 84-62 on Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Broncs (13-14, 7-7 WAC) shot 46.7 percent from the field, their second highest mark of the season.
Freshman
Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs with 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc, with five rebounds, five assists and one block. Sophomore
KaeLynn Boyd scored 21 points on 4-of-9 shooting, plus a career-high 13-of-15 from the line, with seven rebounds five assists and four steals. Junior
Jasmine Thompson scored 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, plus 4-of-4 from the line, with six rebounds.
Tyonna Outland led the Roadrunners (16-10, 10-4 WAC) with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc, plus 2-of-3 from the line.
The Broncs got off to a hot start, hitting seven of their first 13 shots, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc, while holding the Roadrunners 3-for-9 and forcing three turnovers to take an 18-6 lead in the opening six and a half minutes.
The Broncs extended their lead to 23-10 on a jumper by Thompson with 10:37 remaining. The Roadrunners scored the next six points to pull within 23-16, but junior
Tonisha Walker hit a three as the Broncs outscored the Roadrunners 16-7 over the next six minutes to go up 39-23.
The Broncs took their largest lead of 23 points at 84-61 with 31.8 seconds left on a layup by Thompson.
The Broncs play their final home game of the season on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they host Utah Valley. The Broncs will honor senior captain
LaQuita Garner in a special ceremony before the game.
