Women's Tennis To Face Grand Canyon and Texas A&M-Kingsville Friday

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team looks to tie the longest win streak in program history as they host the Grand Canyon University Antelopes at 9 a.m. and the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
On a Roll
The Broncs are trying to tie the program's longest win streak of five in a row that was set from March 14-26, 2008. The Broncs' current four match win streak is tied for the second longest in program history as the 2007-08 Broncs also won four straight matches from Feb. 1-8.
 
During the current win streak, the Broncs have defeated Incarnate Word, Valparaiso, Chicago State and South Dakota State, all of which have been on the road.
 
WAC Athlete of the Week
Sophomore Didi Fatchikova was named Western Athletic Conference women's tennis Athlete of the Week on Tuesday after going undefeated over the weekend.
 
Fatchikova picked up three straight set victories at No. 1 singles as she defeated Valparaiso's Kaitlyn Hamel (6-1, 6-0,) Chicago State's Kirsa Utech (6-2, 6-1) and South Dakota State's Florencia Magni (6-2, 6-4).
 
Fatchikova teamed up with Mariana Ranzahuer to win their three matches at No. 3 doubles. They are on a four-match win streak in doubles competition and are now 5-2 overall.
 
Last Time Out
The Broncs (5-3) extended their win streak to four matches after they defeated the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits 4-3 on Sunday.
 
After dropping the doubles point, the Broncs rallied in singles competition. Reegan Greenwood tied the match after defeating Tacy Haws-Lay 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Christell Amsallem beat Beatriz Souza 7-6, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and then Didi Fatchikova defeated Florencia Magni 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.
 
The Jackrabbits answered with wins at No. 3 and 4 singles tying the match at three but Wanda Beguelin clinched the match for the Broncs at No. 2 singles. Beguelin opened with a 6-3 win in the first set. After falling 4-6 in the second set, Beguelin won 7-6 in the tiebreaker to win the match.
 
Scouting the Antelopes
The Antelopes are 4-3 on the season and are currently on a three-match win streak after defeating Detroit Mercy 4-2.
 
Priscilla Annoual leads the Antelopes with a 6-0 record at No. 1 singles. Annoual has teamed up with Tatum Prudhomme at No. 1 doubles posting a 3-3 record. Prudhomme has posted a 4-2 record at No. 2 singles.
 
Janaki Gunuganti has a 5-2 record at No. 3 singles and is riding a five match win streak. Gunuganti and teammate Frederique Van de Velde lead the Antelopes with a 4-3 record at No. 2 doubles.
 
The Antelopes have wins over Chicago State, South Dakota State and UTEP.
 
Scouting the Javelinas
The Javelinas are 1-4 on the season and are coming off of a 7-2 loss to Dallas Baptist University.
 
Marija Dimitrovska and Ashlea Rosenbaum picked up the two points for the Javelinas. Dimitrovska defeated Amanda Richter 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 at No. 2 singles while Rosenbaum beat Meredith Robinson 6-2, 6-1.
 
The Javlelinas were swept through doubles.
 
The Series
This is the first ever meeting between the Broncs and the Antelopes.
 
The Broncs are 6-0 all-time against the Javelinas in a series dating back to 1988. The last time these two teams faced each other was on March 2, 2012 when the Broncs beat the Javelinas 7-0 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Globetrotters
The Broncs currently have 10 student-athletes on the roster representing eight different countries including Bulgaria, Canada, England, France, Greece, Mexico, Slovakia and the United States.
 
Next Up
The Broncs are back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host WAC rival Kansas City at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
