NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team heads to Louisiana to face the University of New Orleans Privateers on Friday at 2 p.m. at the University Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
The Broncs (3-13) fell to the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners 1-6 last Saturday.
Joseph Bishop defeated UTSA's Kolby Kilgo 6-4, 1-6, 10-4 picking up the lone point for the Broncs (3-13). The Roadrunners (7-11) won the rest of the singles matches to close out the match.
Juan Cruz Soria dropped his first set 6-3 but bounced back with a 6-4 second set victory before falling 10-3 in the tiebreaker.
Alejandro Sanoja also took his match to the tiebreaker against Diogo Casa. Sanoja dropped the first set 7-5 and then came back with a 6-3 win in the second set before falling 10-6 in the tiebreaker.
The Roadrunners swept through doubles to take the early lead as the team of Tomas Stillman and Joel Rubio defeated
Ricardo Hopker and
Chetan Panditi 8-3. Yannick Junger and Bob Kamiljanov then beat
Alejandro Sanoja and
Juan Cruz Soria at No. 2 doubles 8-4.
Scouting the Privateers
The Privateers are 4-6 on the season as they start a four-match home stand. The Privateers are coming off of a 7-0 loss to Nicholls State on March 19.
Chris Appelgren, Gonzalo Garica, Blake Gregor and Rui Silva each have five wins in singles competition. Silva is 4-5 at the No. 1 singles position while Appelgren plays in the No. 5 and 6 positions, Garcia has played both the No. 2 and 3 positions and Gregro plays at the No. 3 and 4 spots.
In doubles, the team of Appelgren and Silva lead the Privateers with a 5-4 record while playing mostly in the No. 3 spot. Gregor and Romain Lefevre have a 4-3 record while playing in both the No. 1 and 2 positions.
The Series
The Broncs are 5-7 all-time against the Privateers in a series that dates back to 1982. Both of these teams met last year as the Broncs fell to the Privateers 3-4 on March 25 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Globetrotters
The Broncs have eight student-athletes representing six countries including, Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, India, Mexico and the United States. Sanoja is from the Rio Grande Valley as he calls Mission home.

The Broncs continue their Louisiana road trip as they face the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on Sunday at 10 a.m.
