Box Score
LYNNWOOD, Wash. – Down 4-1 after eight innings, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team scored four runs in the ninth to take the lead, but the Seattle University Redhawks scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to walk-off 6-5 winners in game one of a doubleheader on Friday at Triton Field on the campus of Edmonds Community College.
The game was played there because it is a turf field and inclement weather has made the Redhawks' (9-11, 1-0 WAC) home field, Bannerwood Park, which has natural grass, unplayable.
Freshman
Victor Garcia Jr. started the Broncs' (11-17, 1-3 WAC) rally with an infield-single against
Will Dennis (3-1). After freshman
Blake Thomas singled, a wild pitch put runners at second and third. One out later, senior
Andy Fortuna reached on an error to score Garcia and move Thomas to third. Fortuna stole second, and a throwing error allowed Thomas to score. Junior
Jesus Garcia was hit by a pitch and then, after senior
Alex Howe grounded out to advance the runners, senior
Alberto Morales came through with a two-run single to give the Broncs a 5-4 lead.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, however,
Brian Olson homered off of freshman
Chris McKeehan (0-1) to tie the game.
Brock Carpenter and
Cullen Hendrickson followed with singles and
Cash McGuire walked to load the bases. Senior
Matthew Harrell came in out of the bullpen for the Broncs and, after getting pinch-hitter
Austen Brand to fly out to right, plunked
Griffin Andreychuck to end the game.
Fortuna and Morales led the Broncs with two RBI each. Howe and Thomas each had two hits.
Broncs senior starter
Sam Street started the game by plunking
Chase Fields. Fields then stole second and scored on an RBI-double by
Landon Cray. Olson followed with an RBI-double to make it 2-0 Redhawks, but Street settled down to strikeout Carpenter, get Hendrickson to pop out and then, one batter later, get
Grant Newton to ground into a fielder's choice.
Redhawks starter
Mac Acker put up zeros through the first four innings. In the fifth, the Broncs loaded the bases with one out. Fortuna was then hit by a pitch to force-in a run to make it 2-1.
In the bottom of the inning, however, the Redhawks loaded the bases with two outs to set up a two-run single by
Ryan Sommers to make it 4-1.
That was it against Street, who pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits and four walks while striking out two.
Acker pitched seven innings, allowing three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
The Broncs and Redhawks play game two of this three game series in approximately 30 minutes.
