LYNNWOOD, Wash. – Tied at three after eight innings, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team allowed an unearned run in the ninth to fall to the Seattle University Redhawks 4-3 in game two of a doubleheader on Friday at Triton Field on the campus of Edmonds Community College.
The game was played there because it is a turf field and inclement weather has made the Redhawks' (10-11, 2-0 WAC) home field, Bannerwood Park, which has natural grass, unplayable.
With the game tied a 3-3 and freshman Nikki Rowe alum
Andrew Padron (1-2) in his third inning of relief,
Ryan Somers pinch-hit and reached on an error. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Somers scored on a walk-off single by
Landon Cray.
That made a winner of
Garrett Anderson (1-1), who pitched five innings of relief, striking out seven while allowing one run on two hits and two walks.
The Broncs (11-18, 1-4 WAC) got on the board right away, putting runners at second and third with two outs against
Grant Gunning, setting up an RBI-single by sophomore PSJA alum
Bryan Ramirez to make it 1-0.
The Redhawks responded in the bottom of the inning, as, with two outs,
Brian Olson tripled and
Brock Carpenter hit an RBI-single against
Alex Henson to tie the game at 1-1.
Senior
Alex Howe gave the Broncs the lead back with his second home run of the season to make it 2-1 in the third.
The Redhawks got that run back in the bottom of the fifth when they put runners at the corners with one out and Olson hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-2.
In the sixth, the Redhawks put runners on the corners with one out.
Michael McCann hit a grounder back to the mound. Henson threw to second for the force in an attempt to turn two, but the Broncs could only get one out, allowing a run to score to make it 3-2.
The Broncs tied the game in the seventh on a two-out RBI-double by Howe.
Howe finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The Broncs and Redhawks complete this three-game series on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Meridian Park in Shoreline, another turf field.
