Baseball Rallies Past Bakersfield

Box Score

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team scored four runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and beat the California State University, Bakersfield Roadrunners 5-1 on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

It is the Broncs' (17-24, 7-8 WAC) third-straight Western Athletic Conference series victory.

The Roadrunners (15-22, 8-7 WAC) took a 1-0 lead in the second on a two-out RBI-single by Andrew Lojewski, but Alex Henson (1-1) settled down to strand eight base runners over the rest of his career-high 8.1 innings. He allowed five hits and five walks while striking out three.

Austin Davis (2-7) held the Broncs to three hits over the first five innings, retiring 14 out of 15 batters entering the sixth. He didn't throw more than six balls in any of the first five innings, but after redshirt junior Edinburg alum Lee Rios worked a leadoff seven-pitch walk, senior Alberto Morales drew a leadoff walk. Senior Jesus Garcia pushed a bunt towards first. Allen Gwynn charged the ball and threw to third late. The throw got away, allowing Rios to score the tying run. One out later, senior Alex Howe loaded the bases with an infield-single, and then, with two outs, senior Shane Ammon hit an infield RBI-single and senior Andy Fortuna singled to center to drive-in two runs to put the Broncs up 4-1.

Howe finished 1-for-3 with a walk, extending his hitting streak to 14 games, during which time he's 20-for-58 (.345).

That was it against Davis, who allowed six hits and two walks while striking out three in seven innings.

The Broncs added a run in the eighth. With runners on the corners and one out, sophomore PSJA alum Bryan Ramirez hit a grounder to second. The throw to first got away, allowing Garcia to score.

Henson started the ninth with a fly out, but after issuing a six-pitch walk, freshman Nikki Rowe alum Andrew Padron came on in relief to record the final two outs.

The Broncs kick-off a five-game road trip on Tuesday at 6 p.m. when they visit No. 4 Texas in a game that will be televised on Longhorn Network.
