Women's Tennis Faces No. 3 New Mexico State in Semifinals of WAC Tournament

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The second-seeded University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team faces the third-seeded New Mexico State Aggies in the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the New Mexico State Tennis Center.
 
Racking Up the Wins
The Broncs finished the regular season 13-7. The 13 wins rank third most in program history. The only other two times the Broncs have won more than 13 matches came in the 2007-08 season when they won 16 and 1989-90 season when they won 15.  
 
Last Time Out
The Broncs closed out their regular season with a 0-4 loss to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on April 9.
 
The Broncs fell behind early in the match as the Islanders picked up wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles to clinch the point. The team of Mariana Ranzahuer and Didi Fatchikova led 7-4 at No. 3 doubles but went unfinished once the doubles point was clinched.
 
The Islanders put the match away as they picked up victories at No. 1, 4 and 5 singles. Wanda Beguelin picked up a 6-4 win in her first set against Judith Vives but went unfinished once the match was clinched. Christel Amsallem also picked up a win in her first set against Vanesa Figueroa but it also went unfinished.
 
Scouting the Aggies
The Aggies finished the regular season with a 9-11 record while picking up a win over conference opponent Idaho on April 13. The Aggies are currently riding a four-match win streak where they defeated CS Fullerton, Western New Mexico, Arkansas State and Idaho.
 
The Aggies defeated the sixth-seeded Seattle U Redhawks 4-0 to move to the semifinals against the Broncs. After clinching the doubles, point the Redhawks got wins at No. 1, 2 and 6 singles to close out the match.
 
The Series
The Broncs are 1-2 all-time against the Aggies in a series that dates back to 2008. The last time these two teams met was back on Feb. 26, 2010 when the Aggies beat the Broncs 4-2 in Las Cruces.
 
The last time the Broncs beat the Aggies was on March 22, 2008 when they won 5-2 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Globetrotters
The Broncs currently have 10 student-athletes on the roster representing eight different countries including Bulgaria, Canada, England, France, Greece, Mexico, Slovakia and the United States.
 
Next Up
The winner of the semifinals match up will head to the championship match on Sunday at 10 a.m.
