PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team faces the Prairie View A&M University Panthers in their first road match of the dual match season on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Prairie View A&M Tennis Complex.
Last Time OutThe Broncs opened their dual match season with a 4-3 loss at the hands of the University of Maryland Baltimore County Retrievers on Wednesday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Broncs (0-1) got out to the early advantage in doubles as the duo of freshman
Dominique Esparza and sophomore
Mariana Ranzahuer defeated Hanna Victorsson and Charlotte Tonjann 6-3 but the Retrievers (1-0) picked up the other two doubles matches to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, UMBC extended their lead with a win at the No. 2 spot but junior
Reegan Greenwood got the Broncs on the scoreboard with a straight set victory after defeating Laura Ambrozic 6-2, 6-1. Ranzahuer beat Alice Taylor 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 3 position and then sophomore
Katia Stavroulaki followed with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Medlena Kurasz but UMBC clinched the match with wins on court five and six.
Scouting the PanthersThe Panthers will be opening their spring dual match season against the Broncs. They were scheduled to face Lamar on January 17 but it was postponed for a later date.
The Panthers return five from last season, including seniors Erika Bond and Christine Ngo Gwodog. They also return sophomores Maria Lackey, Taylor LeFridge and Sydney Thomas.
The SeriesThe Broncs are 12-1 all-time against the Panthers in a series that dates back to 1986. The Broncs swept the Panthers last season in their two meetings. They beat the Panthers 6-1 on Feb. 2 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center and then followed with a 4-0 win in Prairie View on March 6.
The Broncs started the series with nine straight victories before the Panthers snapped that streak with a win in 2012. The Broncs have won the last three matches.
GlobetrottersThe Broncs currently have nine student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries including Colombia, England, France, Greece, Mexico and the United States.
