EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's soccer team had more shots on goal than the No. 19 Seattle University Redhawks and a lead more than two-thirds of the way through the contest in an eventual 2-1 loss on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Vaqueros (4-7-1, 1-3-0 WAC) went up 1-0 in the 57
th minute. Junior
Alex Ochoa brought the ball up the left sideline and sent a cross to freshman Brownsville Rivera alum
Isidro Martinez, who passed the ball to the right side of the box. Junior Hanna alum
Juanito Garcia attacked the ball at an angle to shoot it into the back left corner of the net.
It was Garcia's first goal at the NCAA Division I level. It was Martinez's fourth assist for his team-leading eighth point. Ochoa picked up his second assist.
The Vaqueros' defense stood strong for most of the match, holding off a furious attack in the first 10 minutes that included three corner kicks and disrupting several other chances while holding the Redhawks (10-3-0, 3-1-0 WAC) to just four shots on goal despite 16 total shots. The Vaqueros, on the other hand, had five shots on goal despite just eight total shots.
Junior goalkeeper
Leo Castillo (3-7-1, 1-3-0 WAC) was able to stop two of those shots, but in the 68
th minute,
David Olsen took a pass from
Alex Roldan from the top of the box and sent it into the back of the net to tie the match.
Two minutes later,
Sergio Rivas sent a ball of the post that ricocheted to
Michael Roberts who put it back in for the game-winning goal.
Shane Haworth (10-3-0, 3-1-0 WAC) made four saves for the win.
The Vaqueros kick off a three-match road trip on Friday at 8 p.m. when they visit Air Force.
