PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's soccer team dropped its first-ever Western Athletic Conference match 1-0 to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes on Friday at the GCU Soccer Field.
Vaqueros (3-5-1, 0-1-0 WAC) junior goalkeeper
Leo Castillo (2-5-1, 0-1-0 WAC) made six saves on seven shots.
The Antelopes (5-3-0, 1-0-0 WAC) scored their goal with about five minutes remaining in the first half when
Alberto Sanchez Garcia found the back of the net from the top of the box off a feed by
Damian German.
Kendyl Day (4-3-0, 1-0-0 WAC) made one save for the shutout for the Antelopes, who outshot the Vaqueros 20-3 overall and 7-1 on goal. Each team had three corner kicks.
The Vaqueros close out the road trip on Sunday at 3 p.m. when they visit UNLV, which is receiving votes in the latest NSCAA poll.
