Durham Breaks Career Blocks Record in Loss to New Mexico State

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros volleyball senior Haley Durham broke the program record for blocks in a career in a 0-3 (14-25, 18-25, 24-26) loss to the New Mexico State University Aggies on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Durham finished with six blocks to increase her career total to 326 and pass Lisa Yanez (323, 1993-96) for the record. Two of the blocks were solo, allowing Durham to increase her career block solo total to 63 and leapfrog Danielle Holthe (62, 2002-05) for fifth most in program history.

Durham broke the record early in the third set when she and sophomore Bojana Mitrovic denied Gwen Murphy in the middle of the net. In total, Durham blocked Murphy three times while forcing her into five attack errors and a .136 hitting percentage despite entering the match at a Western Athletic Conference-leading .429.

This is Durham's third program record, as she also holds the records for block assists (263) and blocks per set (0.84). Durham ranks fifth in career hitting percentage at .236.

Durham also had four kills on .500 hitting with five digs.

Junior Alisha Watson led the Vaqueros (8-15, 1-7 WAC) with 10 kills. Mitrovic finished with eight kills, seven digs, a career-high five aces and three blocks.

Nathali Castellanos led the Aggies (19-5, 8-0 WAC) with 13 kills on .522 hitting. Bradley Nash had 11 kills on .556 hitting.

The Vaqueros had their best chance to take a set in the third, leading 8-6 in the early going. The Aggies turned the tables to go up 18-13 on a Nash kill, but after a service error, Mitrovic served up back-to-back aces, Durham blocked Murphy, Tatyana Battle recorded an attack error, junior Fatoumata Dacosta came up with a kill, and then Watson had back-to-back kills to give the Vaqueros a 21-18 lead. The Aggies came back to go up 24-23, but a Mitrovic kill kept the match going before kills by Sasha-Lee Thomas and Castellanos ended it.

The Vaqueros are back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they visit Chicago State.
