EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's soccer team fell to the San José State University Spartans 3-1 on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

Junior Fernando Arellano scored his first goal to get the Vaqueros (4-11-1, 1-7-0 WAC) on the board in the 78th minute with a shot from the right side of the box. Junior Carlos Acevedo recorded his third assist while junior Rico Laitinen notched his first on the play.

The Vaqueros applied much of the early pressure, including a shot by junior Hanna alum Juanito Garcia that hit the crossbar 16 minutes into the match.

The Spartans (6-9-1, 4-3-1 WAC) broke through in the 28th minute, however, when Rory Knibbs stole the ball away from junior goalkeeper Leo Castillo (3-11-1, 1-7-0 WAC) in the box and fired it into an empty net.

Twelve minutes later, Zach Penner found Alex Alcaraz at the top of the box, who sent the ball into the back right corner of the net to make it 2-0.

The Spartans went up 3-0 on a Jonathan Colunga penalty kick in the 54th minute.

Felix Petermann (2-3-1, 2-2-1 WAC) made three saves.

The Spartans outshot the Vaqueros 13-11, including 5-4 on goal.

The Vaqueros are back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host CSU Bakersfield. Gates open at 12.
