EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 2-1 victory over the New Mexico State University Aggies on Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Vaqueros (5-11-3, 3-7-0 WAC) enter the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament having won three of their last four matches.
Sophomore
Marcela Ramirez broke a scoreless tie in the 50
th minute when she picked up a loose ball at the top of the box and fired it into the back of the net.
Then, in the 68
th minute, the Vaqueros defense cleared a ball to the middle of the field, where sophomore
Andreya Barrera picked it up and started a 3-on-2 break. Barrera passed the ball forward to freshman
Kelzy Jepsen on her left, and Jepsen found an open angle to the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Erica Gonzalez (4-7-2, 3-4-0 WAC) made a season-high tying seven saves, with the lone goal coming in the 82
nd minute when
Devin Hart took advantage of a rebound opportunity to make it 2-1.
Aggies (5-14-0, 4-6-0 WAC) goalkeeper
Ashley Martin (3-6-0, 2-2-0 WAC) made two saves.
The Vaqueros outshot the Aggies 23-11, but were outshot 8-4 on goal.
The Vaqueros open up the WAC Tournament, hosted by CSU Bakersfield, with a quarterfinals matchup against third-seeded Missouri-Kansas City on Thursday at 6 p.m.
This is the fifth-straight WAC Tournament in which UTRGV has opened up against Missouri-Kansas City, including the last two basketball and tennis tournaments. UTRGV is 3-1 in those matchups.
