EDINBURG – Four players reached double-figures in scoring as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's basketball team won its home opener, 90-44 over the Concordia University Tornados on Monday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Junior
Mary Savoy led the Vaqueros (2-1) with 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting, nine rebounds, five steals and one block. Junior
Shawnte' Goff scored 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 5-of-8 from behind the arc, to go with a career-high tying seven assists and three steals. Freshman
Bernesha Peters scored 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc, with four assists and three rebounds. Senior
Rickell Preston scored 10 points with nine rebounds (five offensive) and four assists.
In total, the Vaqueros went 12-for-25 from behind the arc, tying for the third most three-pointers in a single game in program history.
Kaelin Domingeaux led the Tornados with nine points.
The Tornados led 7-4 in the opening minutes, but after a Savoy jumper, Peters hit back-to-back three-pointers to power a 12-0 run as the Vaqueros took a 16-7 lead.
The Tornados pulled within eight at the end of the first quarter, but Goff scored 11 points as the Vaqueros opened the second quarter on an 18-4 run to take a 42-20 lead.
After the Tornados scored five of the next seven points, the Vaqueros scored 26-straight points to push the game out of reach.
The Vaqueros play conclude the home stand on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Texas Lutheran in a game that will be televised lived throughout the state of Texas on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel Alternate (825). Doors open at 6.
