STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's basketball team fell to the Oklahoma State University Cowgirls 78-54 on Saturday at Iba-Gallagher Arena.
Junior
Shawnte' Goff led the Vaqueros (5-5) with 14 points while hitting a trio of three-pointers. Junior
Anushka Maldonado scored 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc, with seven rebounds.
Brittney Martin led the Cowgirls (7-0) with 26 points on 11-of-19 shooting and 12 rebounds.
The Vaqueros led twice in the opening minutes, going up 3-2 on a Goff three and 5-3 on a put back layup by freshman
Bernesha Peters. The Cowgirls scored 13 of the next 14 points to build a 10-point lead on a Martin jumper, but a three by freshman
Nichele Hyman brought the Vaqueros back within seven.
The Vaqueros were still within seven at 18-11 after a jumper by junior
Mary Savoy with 3:02 remaining in the first quarter, but the Cowgirls responded with a 12-2 run to make it 30-13.
The Vaqueros got as close as 14 at 36-22 on a Goff three late in the second quarter, but the Cowgirls followed with a 16-4 run to push the game out of reach.
The Vaqueros conclude this seven-game road trip on Monday at 7 p.m. when they visit Kansas State.
