EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team closes out their two-match home stand as they face the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Friday at 1 p.m.
Admission is free to the public and fans are welcomed to attend.
Last Time OutThe fell 1-6 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Thursday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Islanders (6-2) jumped ahead in doubles as they picked up the victory on court three but the Broncs (3-6) answered back on court one. The duo of
Katia Stavroulaki and
Reegan Greenwood pulled out the 8-4 win over Celia Rodriguez and Maider Martin to even doubles.
On court two,
Christel Amsallem and
Dominique Esparza held a 7-6 advantage but fell in the tiebreaker 7-5 giving the doubles point to the Islanders.
In singles, the Islanders won on court three, four, one and six to clinch the match. The Broncs then forced tiebreakers on courts five and two. On court five, Greenwood dropped her first set to Kerry Galhos 3-6 but bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second set forcing the tiebreaker as she went on to win 10-6. The Islanders won on court two to close out the match.
Scouting the CardinalsThe Cardinals are 1-9 on the season heading into Friday's match. They recorded their only win of the season on February 7 after defeating Trinity. The Cardinals are coming off of a 2-5 loss at the hands of Midwestern State on February 20.
Rachel Sadiq leads the Cardinals with three wins on the dual match season. She has posted a 3-7 record while playing all her matches at the No. 1 position. Antea Dedic has a 2-7 record while picking up wins at the No. 5 and 6 positions.
In doubles, the Cardinals have used 10 different teams. Maria Batchinksy and Sarah Savedra have a 1-1 record playing at the No. 2 position. Sadiq and Savedra also have a 1-1 record while playing at the No. 1 position while Sadiq has also paired with Matea Zemunik to post a 1-4 record at the No. 1 position.
The SeriesThe Broncs are 3-1 against the Cardinals in a series that dates back to 1990. The Broncs and Cardinals played two matches least season as the Broncs came away with victories both times.
The Broncs defeated the Cardinals 5-2 on February 16, 2014 in San Antonio and then they defeated the Cardinals 5-2 April 9, 2014 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
GlobetrottersThe Broncs currently have nine student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries including Colombia, England, France, Greece, Mexico and the United States.
