SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team looks for its third straight victory as they face the University of Texas San Antonio Roadrunners on Saturday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
This is the second match of 10 straight matches away from the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Last Time OutThe Broncs won their second straight match after defeating the Missouri State University Bears 4-2 in a neutral site match on Friday.
The Broncs (5-6) clinched the doubles point with a pair of wins on courts one and two. The duo of
Mariana Ranzahuer and
Lison Le Biavant defeated Ekaterina Donetskova and Anelisse Torrico 8-4 at the No. 2 spot.
Christel Amsallem and
Dominique Esparza beat Mackenzie Rozell and Abbey Belote 8-3 to secure the doubles point. The match on court one went unfinished when the point was clinched.
In singles, the Bears (3-10) picked up points after winning on courts one and two but the Broncs answered on three of the last four courts to clinch the match. Amsallem defeated Rozell 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 position while junior
Reegan Greenwood beat Torrico in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 position. Freshman
Natacha Minc opened her match against Belote with a 6-4 win in the first set before dropping her second set 3-6. Minc responded in the final set with a 7-5 victory to take the match.
Scouting the RoadrunnersThe Roadrunners enter Saturday's match against the Broncs with a 7-6 record. They are coming off of a 7-0 win over Missouri State, which snapped a three-match losing streak.
Irene Gandara and Nicole Karaklis lead the Roadrunners with nine singles victories each. Gandara is 9-4 while playing most of her matches at the No. 6 position but has played three matches in the No. 5 position, where she is 3-0.
Karaklis is 9-3 on the season while playing in both the No. 3 and 4 positions. Karaklis is 5-1 at No. 3 position while going 4-2 at the No. 4 position.
In doubles, the duo of Jacobea Junger and Alena Schichkova lead the team with three victories while playing at the No. 1 position. The Roadrunners have used 12 different doubles teams while going 12-18 in the dual match season.
The SeriesThe Broncs are 3-22 all-time against the Roadrunners in a series that dates back to 1986. These two teams played each other last season and it was the Roadrunners who came away with the 4-1 victory at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The last time the Broncs defeated the Roadrunners was on March 14, 2010 when they beat UTSA 4-2 at the Cimarron Country Club in Mission, Texas.
GlobetrottersThe Broncs currently have nine student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries including Colombia, England, France, Greece, Mexico and the United States.
Next UpThe Broncs are back in action on Thursday, March 19 when they face Western New Mexico University in a neutral site match in El Paso.
