Men's Tennis Kicks Off Tough Stretch With No. 31 Oklahoma State on Wednesday

DALLAS – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team kicks off a stretch of four straight matches against ranked opponents when they face the No. 31 Oklahoma State Cowboys in a neutral site match on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the SMU Tennis Complex.
 
After facing the ranked Cowboys, the Broncs face No. 63 UT Arlington on Thursday, No. 22 St. Edwards on Saturday and No. 8 Texas on Sunday.
 
Last Time Out
The Broncs snapped their four-match losing streak as they defeated the Abilene Christian University Wildcats 4-3.
 
The Broncs (3-6) dropped their doubles matches on court one and two to give the Wildcats (4-11) the doubles points.
 
The Broncs responded to the challenge as they answered back in singles competition. Sophomore Juan Cruz Soria got UTPA on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Guilherme Gesser at the No. 1 position.
 
Freshman Miguel Alvarez-Hevia added another point at No. 4 singles. Alvarez-Hevia dropped his first set 3-6 to Henry Adams but bounced back with a 6-2 victories in the second and third sets for the Broncs' second point.
 
Freshman Koby Jansen tied the match with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory over Jason Proctor at No. 3 singles and then it was freshman Nikola Crvelin who clinched it for the Broncs at No. 5 singles. Crvelin opened with a 6-2 win in the first set before dropping the second set 4-6 to Paul Domanski. Crvelin then closed out the match with a 6-2 win in the third set giving the Broncs the final point.
 
Back-to-Back Athletes of the Week
Juan Cruz Soria and Koby Jansen have earned Western Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week this season. They did so in back-to-back weeks.
 
Soria earned his second career athlete of the week honor after defeating Southern Mississippi's Tarun Surat for his ninth win overall. Soria also picked up his third doubles victory after teaming up with Nikola Crvelin at the No. 2 position.
 
Freshman Koby Jansen earned his athlete of the week honor last week for his performance against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. He defeated Ricardo Mayagoitia 4-6, 6-4, 10-2 at the No. 4 singles spot.
 
Scouting the Cowboys
The Cowboys enter the match ranked 31st in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.  They enter with a record of 12-3 on the season and are coming off of a 4-0 win over Pepperdine on March 15.
 
The Cowboys have recorded wins over Nebraska, Illinois State, Oral Roberts, Tennessee, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Alabama, Arkansas, Tulsa, UNLV, Villanova, Memphis and Pepperdine.
 
The Series
The Broncs are 4-3 all-time against the Mavericks, in a series that dates back to 1970. The last time these two teams met was back during the 2001 season as the Cowboys took the win.
 
The last year the Broncs defeated the Cowboys was in 1983.

The Broncs have seven student-athletes representing six countries including, Argentina, Australia, Croatia, Mexico, Spain and Trinidad and Tobago.
 
Next Up
The Broncs continue their spring break stretch when they head to Arlington to face off against the No. 63 UT Arlington Mavericks.
