LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis faces off against the Seattle U Redhawks on Saturday in their second straight match against Western Athletic Conference opponents at the New Mexico State Tennis Complex.
This is the fifth match of 10 straight matches away from the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Last Time OutThe Broncs fell 2-5 to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes in their first Western Athletic Conference match of the season.
The Broncs (6-8) came away with the doubles point as they won their matches on courts two and three. The team of
Mariana Ranzahuer and
Lison Le Biavant defeated Silvia Tumova and Alexandra Petrzalkova 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.
Christel Amsallem and
Dominique Esparza beat Lana Macukat and Lana Rinaldi 8-3 at No. 3 doubles to make sure the Broncs had the early lead.
In singles, the Antelopes (5-6) won on courts one, two, four, five and six to clinch the match.
Reegan Greenwood extended her match win streak to seven matches with a win over Tumova at No. 3 singles. Greenwood dropped her first set 1-6 but bounced back with a 6-3 victory in the second set and then won 10-1 in the tiebreaker to get the point for UTPA.
Scouting the RedhawksThe Redhawks are 4-12 on the season before entering their match against Chicago State on Friday. They entered the weekend on two-match losing streak.
The Redhawks have recorded victories over Lewis & Clark, Montana State, Eastern Washington and Northern Colorado.
The SeriesThe Broncs are 1-2 all-time against Seattle U in a series that dates back to 2009. They last faced each other in 2012 when the Redhawks defeated the Broncs 4-0 at the Great West Conference Championships.
The only time the Broncs have recorded a win over Seattle U was on April 18, 2009 when they won 4-2 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center to close out the regular season.
GlobetrottersThe Broncs currently have nine student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries including Colombia, England, France, Greece, Mexico and the United States.
