Box ScoreEDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the Seattle University Redhawks 16-6 in eight innings on Saturday in the middle game of a three-game series at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Senior
Jesus Garcia led the Broncs (11-13, 0-5 WAC) with his second-straight three-hit game and third of the season, scoring twice. Garcia is 13-for-25 (.520) over the last six games.
Four Redhawks (11-14, 4-1 WAC) had multi-hit games, led by
Sheldon Stober, who went 4-for-6 with a double, a triple, five RBI and two runs scored.
Landon Cray went 3-for-4 with two walks, a double, a triple, three RBI and five runs scored.
Brian Olson went 2-for-3 with two walks, a double, an RBI and a run scored while
Dalton Hurd went 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI.
The Redhawks got all of the runs they needed in the first, sending 12 batters to the plate to score eight unearned runs against freshman
Robert Quinonez (2-1). Cray reached on an error to open the inning. Later in the inning, with Cray at third and Stober at second with one out, Olson walked, but ball four went to the backstop, allowing Cray to score and Stober to move to third.
Grant Newton tried to lay down a suicide squeeze, but Quinonez couldn't handle the ball and everyone was safe. After a walk loaded the bases, Hurd drove-in a run with a single and
Sean Sutton hit a two-run double. One out later, Cray hit a two-run triple and
Griffin Andreychuck hit an RBI-single to cap the inning.
The Redhawks added singles runs in the second and third before putting up a five-spot in the fourth and finishing off the scoring with a run in the eighth.
The Broncs chipped away early, getting two in the second on RBI-groundouts by freshman McAllen Memorial alum
Manny Loredo and junior
Scott Mercer, and one in the third on a sacrifice fly by senior
Logan Landon.
The Broncs added three more in the fifth on a bases loaded walk by junior
Correy Davis and a dropped fly ball that allowed two runs to score.
That was all against
Skyler Genger (3-4), who pitched the first five innings. In the sixth,
Nick Messey took over, striking out three and allowing just an infield-single over the final three innings for his first save.
