Men's Tennis Closes Out Regular Season at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday

CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team closes out its regular season when they face the No. 57 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
 
Last Time Out
The Broncs clinched the No. 2 seed in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament with a 4-3 win over the Seattle University Redhawks.
 
The Broncs (9-11, 4-1 WAC) fell behind early in the match after dropping their doubles matches on courts two and three. Although the Redhawks (4-14, 0-2 WAC) had the doubles point in hand, the team of Juan Cruz Soria and Koby Jansen didn't give up as they beat Riley Newman and Ian Clare 8-6 on court one.
 
It all started on court three with Jansen, who defeated John Stormans 6-3, 6-2 to get the Broncs on the board. Hector Ramirez followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Clare on court two giving the Broncs the 2-1 advantage. Jansen finished conference play with a 4-1 singles record while Ramirez finished with a 3-1 record.
 
Soria improved to a perfect 5-0 record in conference play after defeating Newman 6-2, 6-4 on court one, which also extended the Broncs lead to 3-1. It is also Soria's 10th win of the spring.
 
The Redhawks answered with wins on courts five and six tying the match at three. The match came down to court four where Johnstone opened with a 6-2 win in the first set over Tanner Berkabile. After dropping the second set 5-7, Johnstone started the third set with a break of serve and then never trailed the rest of the way as he went on to win the third set 6-3 to clinch the match.
 
Earning That Rank
The doubles team of Koby Jansen and Juan Cruz Soria earned a No. 79 ranking this week by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
 
Jansen and Soria are 8-5 on the season while playing all of their matches at the No. 1 singles position. The duo has recorded a victory over the University of Texas' duo of Lloyd Glasspool and Søren Hess-Olesen, who were ranked at the time No. 35 by the ITA. They are currently ranked No. 23.
 
Scouting the Islanders
The Islanders enter their final weekend of the regular season ranked No. 57 in the ITA rankings. They currently stand 15-6 on the regular season before facing Incarnate Word on Saturday.
 
The Islanders are coming off a 5-2 victory over Abilene Christian this past Wednesday, as they remain undefeated in conference play.
 
Peter Nagy, who is ranked 97th by the ITA, holds a 16-2 record at No. 1 singles, including three wins over ranked opponents. Nagy is riding a four match win streak and is three wins shy of matching the program record with 67 wins.
 
Kevin Bettendroffer is on a six-match win streak and is 11-5 on the season while playing at the No. 2 position. Ricardo Mayagoitia is 9-7 on the year while playing at No. 3 singles.
 
In doubles, Rauseo and Bettendroffer are 7-3 at the No. 2 spot while Mayagoitia and Paul Cook have posted a 4-3 record at No. 3 doubles.
 
The Series
The Broncs are 13-37-1 all-time against the Islanders in a series that dates back to 1961. The Broncs and Islanders faced each other earlier this season as the Islanders picked up the 6-1 victory in Corpus Christi on February 18.
 
The Broncs last defeated the Islanders on March 10, 2010 as they recorded a 4-3 victory in Corpus Christi.
 
Globetrotters
The Broncs have seven student-athletes representing six countries including, Argentina, Australia, Croatia, Mexico, Spain and Trinidad and Tobago.
 
Next Up
The Broncs are back in action when they face the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos on Saturday, April 25 in the semifinal round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
