EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team close out their 2015 home schedule when they host the University of Texas San Antonio Roadrunners on Friday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Admission is free and the public is welcomed to attend.
Last Time OutThe Broncs defeated the No. 8 Laredo Community College Palominos 7-0 on Thursday.
The Palominos (1-7) are ranked eighth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Junior/Community College rankings.
The Broncs (7-10) started doubles with a win on court three as
Nikola Crvelin and
Elliot Johnstone defeated Cody Arnold and Eddie Marquez 6-3.
Ethan Ammon and
Hector Ramirez then clinched the doubles point for the Broncs after they defeated Jose De Sario and Gavin Givel 6-4 on court two.
Koby Jansen and
Juan Cruz Soria completed the sweep of doubles with a 7-5 win over Arturo Pinazo and Gabriel Evans on court one.
The Broncs did not drop a set as they swept through singles to clinch the match. Ammon started things off with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Arnold at No. 5 singles. Jansen followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Marquez at No. 3 singles and it was Soria who clinched the match for the Broncs after defeating Evans 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot.
Crvelin trailed Grivel 1-4 in the first set before winning five straight points to take the first set 6-4 and then closed out his match with a 6-0 win in the second set. Johnstone picked up a win at No. 4 singles after he defeated Josh Regaldo 6-3, 6-2 and Ramirez closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over De Sario to complete the sweep.
Juan Cruz Soria Does It AgainFor the fourth time this season, a Bronc has been named WAC Athlete of the Week.
Juan Cruz Soria earned his second honor of the season and the third of his career.
Soria went 3-0 in singles competition over the weekend while playing all his matches at the No. 1 position. He defeated Grand Canyon's Felix Schueller 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 on Friday to help the Broncs clinch the match over the Antelopes. Soria followed that with a win over New Mexico State's Strahinja Trecakov in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. He closed out the weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kansas City's Airam Castellano for his seventh win of the spring and has now won four straight matches.
In doubles, Soria teamed with
Koby Jansen to beat New Mexico State's Paul Denele and Thomas Douglas 8-2 for their sixth win of the season.
Koby Jansen earned the honor on February 24, Soria was named athlete of the week on March 3 and
Hector Ramirez earned the honor on March 24.
Scouting the RoadrunnersThe Roadrunners are 12-7 entering Friday's match after nearly upsetting Texas A&M but fell 3-4.
Tomas Stillman leads the Roadrunners with a 16-3 singles record and the 82
nd ranked ITA player. Stillman earned his second Conference USA Athlete of the Week after he won all three singles and doulbes matches.
Tito Moreiras holds a 14-4 singles record. He saw his 11-match win streak come to an end last weekend. Stillman and Moreiras have teamed up to post a six-match win streak while being undefeated.
The SeriesThe Broncs are 22-29 all-time against the Roadrunners in a series that dates back to 1982. These two teams faced each other last season and it was the Roadrunners who came away with a 6-1 victory in San Antonio.
The last time the Broncs defeated the Roadrunners was on March 14, 2009 as they picked up the 4-2 victory in McAllen.
GlobetrottersThe Broncs have seven student-athletes representing six countries including, Argentina, Australia, Croatia, Mexico, Spain and Trinidad and Tobago.
Next UpThe Broncs head to Chicago for more conference matches when they face the Chicago State on April 10.
