EDINBURG – In its first match in 18 years, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's soccer team beat the Huston-Tillotson University Rams 3-0 on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Vaqueros (1-0-0) are now on a three-match winning streak dating back to Oct. 1997.
Sophomore
Olli Tynkkynen scored the first goal on a one-on-one opportunity against Rams (1-1-0) goalkeeper
Ubaldo Vazquez (1-1-0) at 27:32.
That was it for a while, but after multiple scoring opportunities by the Rams were denied by redshirt sophomore Sharyland alum
Jorge Medina (1-0-0) and the Vaqueros' defense, junior
Carlos Acevedo sent a long ball ahead to freshman Brownsville Rivera alum
Isidro Martinez who sent it ahead to freshman
Isaiah Hinds for the second goal of the match.
Then, with five and a half minutes left, a pair of former UT Brownsville and Hanna High School teammates connected, as junior
Juanito Garcia found Acevedo for the final goal.
The Vaqueros are back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. when they host Buffalo as part or the Rio Grande Valley Invitational. IPFW will face Houston Baptist at 4:30. Gates open at 3:30.
