EDINBURG – Junior
Elisa Espino scored the first overtime goal in program history to propel the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's soccer team to its first overtime victory, 1-0 over the University of South Dakota Coyotes on Saturday in the UTRGV Invitational at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
With just over three minutes left in the first overtime, sophomore
Hanna Spets stole the ball and dribbled it in traffic to the top of the box. After drawing a crowd, Spets found Espino on the left sideline, who, after settling the ball, fired a long strike that bounced to the left of Coyotes (2-5) goalkeeper
Sydney Hardin (2-1-0) and into the back of the net.
Vaqueros (2-2-2) goalkeeper and sophomore Harlingen South alum
Erica Gonzalez (1-2-2) made six saves for her first shutout of the season and third of her career. Among the saves Gonzalez made were a diving grab of a rebound opportunity when the ball came off the cross bar, and a stop of a penalty kick with two minutes left.
The Vaqueros close out the tournament on Sunday at 11 a.m. when they host Houston Baptist in the final match of the tournament. Southern Utah plays South Dakota at approximately 1 p.m. Gates open at 10.
