EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's soccer team extended its shutout streak to a program record 327:20 before conceding a goal in the final minute of a 1-0 loss to the Texas Southern University Tigers on Wednesday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Vaqueros' (2-3-3) shutout streak started with the final 29:58 of a 2-2 double overtime draw at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sept. 6, ran through back-to-back shutouts of South Dakota and Houston Baptist over the weekend, and ended with 45 seconds left in regulation when a
Paige Hayward corner kick was redirected to
Maya Turner, who found
Marlyn Campa for the game-winning goal.
It was the first goal allowed by junior
Maria Eriksen (1-1-1) this season after playing 289:14 of scoreless soccer. Eriksen finished with four saves.
The Tigers (2-6-0) finished with 13 corner kicks while the Vaqueros had four.
Liliana Hernandez (1-4-0) made three saves for the shutout.
Each team attempted 12 shots, while the Tigers holding a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
The Vaqueros close out non-conference play on Sunday at 7 p.m. when they visit UNLV.
