LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's soccer team closed out non-conference play with a 4-1 loss to the UNLV Rebels on Sunday at Johann Field.
The Vaqueros (2-4-3) got their goal with about seven minutes remaining, when sophomore
Zinnia Hannig scored her first goal of the season off of passes from junior
Elisa Espino and freshman
Diandra Aliaga.
The goal came against
Jessie Clark, who made one save in 21:19 of relief.
Jordan Sallee (5-4-0) made three saves in 68:41 of shutout soccer for the Rebels (5-4-0).
The Rebels got on the board just under 16 minutes into the match on a strike by
Dakota Blazak off of passes by
Jordan Magnin and
Susie Bernal to make it 1-0.
Two minutes later,
Jodi Barber found the back of the net on a set piece with assists by
Hannah Alba and
Denali Murnan.
The Rebels went up 3-0 with about 13 minutes left in the first half on a strike by
Brittney Gideon off a pass from Alba.
The Rebels completed the scoring at 53:44, when Barber scored her second goal of the match off of Magnin's second assist.
Sophomore Harlingen South alum
Erica Gonzalez (1-3-2) made three saves before giving way to junior
Maria Eriksen at halftime. Eriksen made one save.
The Rebels outshot the Vaqueros 23-8, including 8-5 on goal.
The Vaqueros open up Western Athletic Conference play on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they visit New Mexico State.
