SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's soccer team struck first before falling to the San Diego State University Aztecs, who received votes in this week's NSCAA Coaches Poll, 3-1 on Friday at the SDSU Sports Deck.
The Vaqueros (2-3-1) broke through 24 and a half minutes into the game when freshman
Miko Puuskari struck from the top left corner of the box to make it 1-0. It was Puuskari's first-career goal.
That was the only shot Aztecs (4-0-2) goalkeeper
Adam Allmaras (3-0-1) faced.
The Aztecs (4-0-2) tied the match 15 minutes later when
Rene Reyes sent a cross to the center of the box and
Travis Nicklaw found the back of the net.
The Aztecs added a goal mid-way through the second half when
Casey Macias struck from five yards out off a pass from
Aleks Berkolds.
Then, with just over five minutes remaining,
Kyle Adams used a header off a corner kick by
Dallin Cutler to push the match out of reach.
The Vaqueros were outshot 15-4 overall and 6-1 on goal.
Junior goalkeeper
Leo Castillo (1-3-1) made three saves.
The Vaqueros wrap up this road trip on Sunday at 4 p.m. when they visit Cal State Fullerton.
