LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's soccer team opened up Western Athletic Conference play with a 2-1 loss to the New Mexico State University Aggies on Sunday at the NM State Soccer Athletic Complex.
The Vaqueros (2-5-3, 0-1-0 WAC) got on the board just over 17 minutes into the match when junior
Sheridan Becanic took a feed from junior
Elisa Espino and headed it into the back of the net. It was Becanic's first goal of the season and her first-career WAC goal. Espino now has three assists and a team-leading seven points.
The Aggies (2-8-0, 1-0-0 WAC) tied the match less than eight minutes into the second half when
Micaela Milavec fired a corner kick into the box to set up a header by
Audrey Chavez.
The Aggies got the game-winner with two minutes remaining when
Devin Hart scored from 15 feet out.
Sophomore Harlingen South alum
Erica Gonzalez (1-4-2, 0-1-0 WAC) made six saves in the loss.
Rian Nials (1-4-0, 1-0-0 WAC) made three saves in a scoreless second half for the win.
The Aggies outshot the Vaqueros 19-7, including 8-4 on goal.
The Vaqueros return home on Friday at 7 p.m. when they host Grand Canyon at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Gates open at 6.
