EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's soccer team closed out non-conference play with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Our Lady of the Lake University Saints on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Vaqueros (3-4-1) won the match at 95:18 when junior
Rico Laitinen settled a rebound off an attempt to clear the ball out of the box and sent it past Saints (5-3-0) goalkeeper
Jorge Cavazos (2-2-0).
The Vaqueros initially broke through about three minutes before halftime on freshman
Isaiah Hinds' second goal of the season. The play began when freshman Brownsville Rivera alum
Isidro Martinez broke through traffic to send the ball ahead to sophomore
Olli Tynkkynen to the right of the box. Tynkkynen sent a cross to Hinds who fired the ball in to the left side of the net.
The Saints tied the match with about eight minutes left in regulation on a top shelf free kick by
Humberto de la Garza.
That was it against junior goalkeeper
Leo Castillo (2-4-1), who made five saves.
The Vaqueros outshot the Saints 15-14. The Saints outshot the Vaqueros 6-4 on goal.
The Vaqueros open Western Athletic Conference play on Friday at 9 p.m. when they visit Grand Canyon.
