Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to IPFW

Two Vaqueros Earn All-Tournament Team Honors

EDINBURG – After coming back to tie the match with less than five minutes left, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's soccer team allowed a goal in the final minute to drop a 3-2 heartbreaker to the IPFW Mastadons in the final match of the Rio Grande Valley Invitational on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

Two Vaqueros (1-1-1) earned All-Tournament Team honors, led by senior Archie Massen, who was all named Defensive MVP of the tournament. Freshman Brownsville Rivera alum Isidro Martinez was also part of the All-Tournament Team.

Massen contributed strong play on all side of the field, shutting down Buffalo's top scoring threat on Friday while contributing a lot of energy, awareness and poise in the midfield during both matches. Massen's prowess on defense helped translate into the game-tying goal as he took a rebound off a corner kick and shot it through traffic into the back of the net.

Less than four minutes later, however, tournament Offensive MVP Austin West scored his second goal of the tournament, scoring from 40 feet out off a steal.

The Vaqueros had two corner kicks in the final seconds, but were unable to get a shot off.

After scoring his first-career goal on Friday, Martinez assisted on the Vaqueros' first goal on Sunday, finding junior Hanna alum Carlos Acevedo who passed the ball ahead to junior Sami Tittanen for his first goal of the season 15 minutes into the match.

The Mastadons (2-2-0) tied the match at 1 four minutes into the second half when All-Tournament honoree Correy Tom scored off a feed from his brother, Zach Tom.

Zach Tom came up with an assist on the next goal as well, finding All-Tournament Team selection Jose Rodriguez on the left side of the box to make it 2-1 Mastadons.

Vaqueros junior goalkeeper Leo Castillo (0-1-1) made five saves while Raphael Kotzock (2-2-0) made four.

The Mastadons outshot the Vaqueros 17-10, including 8-6 on goal.

The Vaqueros are on the road for their next four matches, including an east coast swing next weekend starting Friday at 6 p.m. at UNC Greensboro.
