Live Stats | Live VideoWACO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's tennis team kicks off their spring dual match season on Thursday when they face the No. 11 Baylor University Bears at 6 p.m. at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
Last Time OutThe Vaqueros competed at the ITA Texas Regional where competition was cut short because of bad weather.
Freshman
Dominique Ibarra posted a singles victory in the opening round after defeating Sam Houston State's Carrie Casey 6-3, 6-4.
Scouting the BearsThe Bears are 1-0 on the season after defeating Hawai'i 4-3 on January 9. The Bears will face McNeese State on Thursday before facing the Vaqueros.
Last season the Bears finished 28-7 while going 21-3 at home. They welcome back Blair Shankle, who finished the dual match season with a 23-2 record while mainly playing the No. 2 and 3 positions.
Along with Shankle, the Bears have four returners who won 14 or more matches in 2015. Kelley Anderson went 21-7, Kiah Generette posted a 14-6 record, Theresa Van Zyl went 15-6.
In doubles, the Bears used 22 different team combinations. Out of those 22 different teams, only three posted more than five victories. The team of Generette and Shankle posted a 9-1 record with Shankle also teaming with Ema Burgic to go 8-4 and the team of Anderson and Leolia Jean Jean went 9-3.
The All-Time SeriesThe Vaqueros are 0-4 against the Bears all-time in a series that dates back to 1990. The Bears and Vaqueros faced off last season and it was the Bears who came away with the 7-0 victory.
Climbing the RanksSenior
Reegan Greenwood currently ranks eighth in program history with 43 career singles wins. She is one win away from tying Wanda Beguelin (2011-14) for seventh all-time and just seven wins away from Tania Webster (1988-91) for fifth place. Ellen Nelissen (1991-95) tops the all-time list with 67 wins.
