WACO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's tennis team continues their season opening road trip as they face the McNeese State Cowgirls in a neutral site match on Friday at 10 a.m. on the campus of Baylor Univeristy.
Last Time OutThe Vaqueros women's tennis team fell to the No. 11 Baylor Bears 1-4 in their season opener.
The Vaqueros (0-1) got on the board in doubles competition after the duo of
Doris Aleksovska and
Dominique Ibarra defeated McKenna Martin and Hadley Young 6-0 at the No. 3 spot but the Bears (3-0) answered with wins on court one and two to take the doubles point.
In singles, the Vaqueros tied the match at one apiece when freshman
Tara Donaho recorded her first career singles victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Young at the No. 6 spot. The Bears answered with wins on court two, one and three to close out the match.
Scouting the CowgirlsThe Cowgirls are coming off of a loss to the No. 11 Baylor Bears. They begin the 2016 season in search of their fourth consecutive 10-win season after going 13-8 last season.
The Cowgirls return six from last season's team. Two-time Southland Conference Player of the Year Klaudia Gawlik leads the group of returners which include All-SLC First Team selection Julia Kral, Louisiana Freshman of the Year Sarah Jurakova, Anastasija Trubich, Vivien Borbely and Hannah Brett.
Gawlik went 11-5 last season after playing all her matches at the No. 1 spot. Kral led the team with a 14-4 record while mainly playing at the No. 2 spot and Brett also finished with double-digit victories after posting a 10-7 record while playing the No. 2 and 3 spots.
In doubles, Brett and Kral teamed up for a 10-4 record, mainly playing at the No. 2 spot. Gawlik and Trubich went 8-6 at the No. 1 spot and Borbely teamed with Sarah Jurakova to go 10-4 last season while mainly playing in the No. 3 spot.
The Cowgirls went 2-1 in neutral site matches last season.
The All-Time SeriesThe Vaqueros are 3-6 all-time against the Cowgirls in a series that dates back to 1996.
The last time these two teams met was back on March 30, 2010 when the Vaqueros, then the Broncs, defeated the Cowgirls 4-3 at home.
Climbing the RanksSenior
Reegan Greenwood currently ranks eighth in program history with 43 career singles wins. She is one win away from tying Wanda Beguelin (2011-14) for seventh all-time and just seven wins away from Tania Webster (1988-91) for fifth place. Ellen Nelissen (1991-95) tops the all-time list with 67 wins.
