EDINBURG – Freshman
Antonio Green scored all of his 16 points in the second half to lead the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's basketball team to a 71-66 victory over the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Green finished with four three-pointers, three of which came during a 22-8 run that saw the Vaqueros (6-13, 2-2 WAC) go from down 36-29 in the opening seconds of the second half to up 51-44 with 11:10 remaining.
The Vaqueros led the rest of the way, taking their largest lead at 62-54 on Green's final three with 5:07 left.
The Vaqueros outscored the 'Roos (8-10, 1-2 WAC) 42-33 in the second half.
Three other Vaqueros reached double-figures, including graduate student
Dakota Slaughter, who had 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc, with eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Sophomore
Dan Kimasa scored 12 points with eight rebounds. Senior
Shaquille Hines scored 12 points with five rebounds.
Darius Austin led the 'Roos with 15 points.
LaVell Boyd scored 13 points with five rebounds.
Martez Harrison scored 11 points.
The Vaqueros led 7-5 after an early jumper by senior
Everett Osborne, but a Boyd three sparked a 7-0 run as the 'Roos went up 12-7.
Graduate student
J.J. Thompson responded with a three to spark a 10-1 run that saw the Vaqueros go up 17-13.
The Vaqueros still led 24-23 after Kimasa hit a pair of free throws, but the 'Roos outscored the Vaqueros 13-5 over the final six minutes of the first half and first 16 seconds of the second half to take a 36-29 lead.
The Vaqueros kick-off a three-game road trip on Thursday at 8 p.m. at CSU Bakersfield in a game that will be televised live nationally on American Sports Network.
