BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners 77-58 on Thursday at the Icardo Center.
Graduate student
Dakota Slaughter led the Vaqueros (6-14, 2-3 WAC) with 12 points and eight rebounds. Senior
Shaquille Hines scored 11 points with four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore
Dan Kimasa scored 10 points with five rebounds and one steal.
Kevin Mays led the Roadrunners (14-5, 4-0 WAC) with 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting and 10 rebounds.
Aly Ahmed scored 16 points on 8-of-14 shooting with seven rebounds.
Dedrick Basile scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting with five assists.
Damiyne Durham scored 12 points while hitting four three-pointers.
Mays hit back-to-back jumpers as the Roadrunners scored the first six points of the game to jump out to a 19-6 lead. Graduate student
J.J. Thompson responded with a three, but Mays knocked down two more baskets to make it 23-9.
Kimasa responded with a pair of baskets and Hines converted a three-point play as the Vauqeros pulled within 25-16, but the Roadrunners responded with a 14-3 run to go up 39-19 with 2:47 remaining in the first half.
The Vaqueros scored seven of the final eight points of the half to launch a 19-4 run that saw them pull within 43-38 on a Slaughter three at the 14:14 mark, but the Roadrunners answered with a 25-8 run to push the game out of reach.
The Vaqueros are back in action on Saturday at 9 p.m. when they visit Seattle U.
