SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the Seattle U Redhawks 70-59 on Saturday at Key Arena.
Graduate student
Dakota Slaughter led the Vaqueros (6-15, 2-4 WAC) with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists. Graduate student
J.J. Thompson scored 14 points with four rebounds and four assists. Senior
Shaquille Hines scored 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting with eight rebounds. Freshman
Antonio Green scored 11 points with five rebounds.
Jack Crook led the Redhawks (8-11, 2-3 WAC) with 16 points, four rebounds and five assists.
Manny Chibuogwu scored 13 points with six rebounds.
Manroop Clair scored 12 points while hitting four three-pointers.
Brendan Westendorf scored 11 points with seven assists.
William Powell scored 10 points with five rebounds.
The game was tight throughout the first half. With the Vaqueros down 6-4, Green nailed a three-pointer and sophomore
Dan Kimasa make it 9-6. Powell followed with a layup, but Thompson buried a three to make it 12-8.
The Redhawks responded with a 9-0 run to take a 17-12 lead on an
Aaron Menzies layup midway throught the half, but the Vaqueros went on an 11-2 run of their own to go up 23-19 on another Thompson three.
The Redhawks tied the game at 23 on a Chibuogwu jumper, but a Slaughter layup put the Vaqueros back on top.
The Redhawks scored the next six points to take the lead, going up 34-27 on a Powell layup at the start of the second half.
The Vaqeruos pulled to within 38-35 on a Hines free throw, and were still within 40-37 on a Hines layup with 15:56 remaining, but the Redhawks went on a 20-11 run over the next nine and a half minutes to push the game out of reach.
The Vaqueros are back in action on Saturday at 8 p.m. when they visit New Mexico State.
