Hines Has Career Night as Men’s Basketball Falls at New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Senior Shaquille Hines scored a career-high 30 points, but the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's basketball fell to the New Mexico State University Aggies 92-68 on Saturday at the Pan American Center.

Hines hit a career-high five three-pointers in seven attempts while going a career-best 12-for-18 overall. He also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals in 32 minutes. Freshman Antonio Green reached double-figures for the Vaqueros (6-16, 2-5 WAC) as well, finishing with 15 points and six rebounds.

Pascal Siakam led four Aggies (14-8, 6-1 WAC) in double-figures scoring with 24 points on 12-of-16 shooting, 16 rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Jalyn Pennie scored 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Matt Taylor scored 12 points. Ian Baker scored 11 points with six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

The Aggies jumped out to a 12-3 lead, but a jumper by Green and a three by Hines allowed the Vaqueros to pull within 14-8.

The Vaqueros closed to within 19-14 on a Hines jumper at the 11:34 mark, but Siakam hit a jumper and Tanveer Bhullar made back-to-back layups to push the Aggies' lead to 25-14.

Green responded with a three, and then after a Siakam jumper, graduate student Dakota Slaughter made a jumper to make it 27-19, but the Aggies closed the half on a 21-7 run to push their lead to 48-26.

After Jonathon Wilkins hit a three to open the second half, Hines nailed two threes and Green made a pair of free throws to bring the Vaqueros within 53-34, but that's as close as they got.

The Vaqueros play five of their next seven games at home, starting Thursday at 7 p.m. when they host Utah Valley at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Doors open at 6.
