EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 88-77 on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Graduate student Dakota Slaughter led five Vaqueros (6-17, 2-6 WAC) in double-figure scoring with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Sophomore Dan Kimasa scored 14 points with eight rebounds. Graduate student J.J. Thompson scored 14 points with four assists. Freshman Antonio Green scored 13 points. Senior Shaquille Hines scored 11 points with six assists.

Marcel Davis led the Wolverines (10-13, 5-3 WAC) with 23 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals. Jayden Jackson scored 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Dayon Goodman scored 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

After an Andrew Bastien layup to start the game, Slaughter made a layup as the Vaqueros scored nine-straight points to take the lead.

The Wolverines responded with a 10-2 run, capped by a pair of Jackson baskets to take a 12-11 lead.

The Vaqueros took the lead right back on a three-point play by Kimasa. Then, with the Vaqueros still leading 16-14, the Wolverines scored nine in a row to take a 23-16 lead.

The Wolverines led by as many as eight in the first half, going up 31-23 on a Goodman layup at the 6:14 mark, but another three-point play by Kimasa sparked a 10-2 run as the Vaqueros tied the game at 33.

The game was still tied at 35 with 2:53 remaining, but the Wolverines scored the final seven points of the half to go up 42-35.

Davis opened up the second half with a three to give the Wolverines a 45-35 lead, but Slaughter responded with a three to start a 20-7 run that saw the Vaqueros regain the lead on a three-point play by Thompson that made it 55-52 with 12:40 remaining.

Davis scored 13 points, however, as the Wolverines outscored the Vaqueros 23-10 over the next seven and a half minutes to rebuild their 10-point lead at 75-65.

Slaughter responded with a three and Green made a layup to make it a five-point game. Then, after a Goodman layup, Hines nailed a three bring the Vaqueros within 77-73, but that's as close as they got.

The Vaqueros are back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they host Grand Canyon. Doors open at 6.
