HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team fell at Houston Baptist University (HBU) 3-1 on Sunday at Sorrels Field.
UTRGV (3-7-2, 1-3-1 WAC) scored in the 71
st minute, when freshman
Damian Roszczyk headed a pass to the left that sophomore Brownsville Rivera alum
Isidro Martinez finished. It was Martinez's first goal of the season.
UTRGV outshot HBU (4-8-1, 2-4-0 WAC) 13-10 and each team attempted five shots on goal. UTRGV had 12 corker knickers while HBU had three.
HBU got on the board at 35:15 on a
Devon Grant header off a cross by
Lucas de Paula.
That's where the score stayed until 62:31, when HBU scored twice in less than four minutes. First,
Malik Key scored on a shot that deflected off the left post and into the back of the net. Then,
Justin Martin took a through pass by
Darrell Johnson and shot to the lower left side of the net to make it 3-0.
Freshman
Esa Aalto (2-3-1) made two saves while
Chance Pope (4-8-1) made four saves.
UTRGV is back in action on Friday at 9:30 p.m. when it visits CSU Bakersfield.
