EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team earned its first point of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) season by playing Grand Canyon University (GCU) to a 0-0 double overtime draw on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
UTRGV (2-5-2, 0-1-1 WAC) had its best opportunity to score with a minute and a half left in the second overtime, when sophomore Brownsville Rivera alum
Isidro Martinez escaped the defense to his right and fired at the net, but
Kendyl Day (3-5-2) threw up his left hand to punch the ball out of the way.
Freshman
Esa Aalto (1-1-1) was tested three times, once early in the match and then once in each overtime period, but he made all three saves for his second shutout.
GCU (3-5-2, 0-0-2 WAC) outshot UTRGV 12-6, including 3-1 on goal.
UTRGV is back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. when it hosts UNLV on Greek Night. The first 200 UTRGV fraternity and sorority members in attendance will receive free "UTRGV Greek" t-shirts. Gates open at 6.
