EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's soccer team scored the game-winning goal with four seconds left to knock off first place UNLV for the second year in a row with a 2-1 victory on Thursday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
With time winding down, sophomore Brownsville Rivera alum
Isidro Martinez sent a long pass from midfield to freshman
Jaakko Hietikko on the left sideline. Hietikko sent the ball forward to senior
Alex Ochoa, who sent a cross to the right that went between the pipe and
Enrique Adame (2-2-0).
UNLV (4-8-0, 2-1-0 WAC) controlled the pace of play for much of the first half, but in the final minute, freshman
Damian Roszczyk brought the ball to the right side of the box then passed back to the middle to freshman
Ilias Kosmidis who found the back of the net for his first-career goal. It was Roszczyk's first-career assist.
UTRGV's (3-5-2, 1-1-1 WAC) lead was short lived, though, as on the ensuing kickoff,
Oscar Velasquez shot directly toward the net from midfield. His shot hit the cross bar, going straight down and just across the goal line to tie the match at 1.
Freshman
Esa Aalto (2-1-1) made four saves for the win.
UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 8 p.m. when it visits No. 24 Utah Valley.
